Since around 70 percent of women in the age range of perimenopause are employed, learning how to handle hot flashes at work is critical.
Most women enter into perimenopause, a predatory phase before menopause, between the ages of 40 and 55. Perimenopause brings significant changes to the estrogen levels in a woman’s body, triggering a variety of symptoms. Hot flashes are among the most common and notorious perimenopause symptoms.
Here are 4 tips to keep cool and avoid hot flashes at work:
- Dress Smart:
Wool, silk and synthetic fabrics all trap heat and can raise body temperature. Instead, wear cotton, linen and rayon, which breathe better than other fabrics. Choose loose clothing if possible; dress in layers so that you are able to remove clothing when you feel a flash coming on.
- Lower the Temperature:
If you can, lower the thermostat in your office. If this is not possible, try to crack a window or keep a fan nearby your desk. A little air circulation may help you keep cool and ward off a hot flash.
- Eat Right:
Try to avoid spicy foods or hot foods, like soups. These foods can raise your overall body temperature. Instead, eat cold foods at work, like salads, sandwiches or cold pastas. This rule also applies to drinks; if you need a morning coffee take it iced and make sure to stay well hydrated.
- Plan Ahead:
Rushing causes stress, and stress can cause hot flashes. Schedule adequate time to get your tasks done and think ahead to reduce unnecessary anxiety.
