Are your eating habits ruling your life? Do you feel ashamed about them? Do you often have overeating episodes? You are not alone. More than 3 million people in the United States are dealing with binge eating disorder (BED). Seeking help and treatment is the best way for you to overcome this disorder.
Binge eating can happen unexpectedly during the day, and can be different for each person, depending on the person, their eating habits and other factors.
Here are 4 steps that can help you recover and feel better:
- Identify your binge eating behavior: Recognizing the signs of a relapse plays a very important role in your recovery from this disorder. What can really help is taking 5 minutes every week to sit back and ask yourself how you are feeling. You can take notes about how you feel as well as different patterns of your disordered eating or different episodes that occurred during this week. Keeping a journal could help you better understand your disorder and identify reoccurring trends.
- Seek help: Dealing with your condition alone may not be a good idea. Reaching out for help is very important. Find a doctor who specializes in eating disorders and talk about your symptoms and the way you feel about this disorder with them. What could be even more helpful is sharing your journal notes with the doctor. This will allow them to take a closer and more personal look into your condition to help them to provide you with more specific advice and treatment options.
- Recognize the triggers: Use your journal to identify which foods, situations, or emotions trigger your binge eating. You can identify and avoid any possible triggers to help diminish the number of binge eating episodes.
- Find the right treatment: Talk to your doctor and decide which treatment could work best for you. Your doctor will be able to analyze and explain to you the different treatment options and help you to choose the one that will work best for you.
