We often assume that our emotions are good or bad, but this is not exactly correct. Why not? Because your emotions are not good or bad. It is how you decide to deal with those emotions that makes all the difference. Our emotions can have an influence on our behavior and thinking, but you should always remember that we are strong enough to control them if we want to. We just need to be aware of how our emotions can control our actions.
Here are some ways your emotions can get the better of you:
- Fear: We usually describe fear as a feeling that holds us back from something. Fear can be a disturbing and uncomfortable feeling, but at the same time, it’s a very normal emotion. But what is not normal, is if your fear is holding you back from your goals and ambitions. An example of fear getting the best of you would be avoiding to apply for a job because you fear that you will be rejected. What can you do? Help yourself regain confidence by practicing.
- Anger: Although anger is known as an emotion that tends to leads you to doing things you may regret later, most of us would also agree that good things can sometimes stem from anger. A great example of how anger can lead to great things could be the revolutions that have happened around the world. From revolutions aiming to independence, to revolutions aiming for a positive change, like that of industrial revolution. Learn how to recognize feelings of anger and be prepared to control and use them accordingly.
- Anxiety: Anxiety is often described as “wasting time on worrying”. Although this description could be right for a few cases, you should not worry about events that are out of your control. The best way to control your anxiety is to recognize when you anxiety is nothing more than worrisome thoughts, and commit to improving the situation through active problem solving.
