The signs and symptoms of binge eating disorder are not always easy to spot. It is not as simple as witnessing someone compulsively overeat. More often than not, people with binge eating disorder are not only ashamed and embarrassed of their eating episodes, but try to hide their symptoms from others, and try to eat in secret. Here are several symptoms of binge eating disorder to keep an eye out for:
Behavioral symptoms:
- Eating even after you are full
- Eating large amounts of food at a fast pace
- Having no self-control over what you are eating or when to stop eating
- Eating normally around others, then bingeing in privacy
- Hiding and stockpiling food to binge eat in secret
- Eating continuously throughout the day, without setting specific meal times
Emotional symptoms:
- Never feeling satisfied despite the large amount of food you eat
- Feeling numb while bingeing and subconsciously eating like you’re not there
- Resorting to eating due to stress
- Feeling embarrassment due to how much you’re eating
- Feeling guilty and disgusted after binge eating
- Feeling desperate to control your eating habits and weight
