The topic for October’s Dr. Chat is ‘Coping with Tragedy.’ In this interview, Dr. Rishi Kakar M.D. discusses common emotions and reactions people may experience after a tragedy and how to deal with these reactions.
About Dr. Rishi Kakar M.D.:
Dr. Kakar received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. There, he was selected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honors Medical Society and received Harold O Wiggers Award based on his potential to become a scholarly physician. Additionally, Dr. Kakar was awarded “American Academy of Neurology Award for Excellence in Neurosciences”. His post graduate residency training included medical internship at Drexel University-St. Peters University Hospital, where he was given the “Most Outstanding Resident of the Year Award”. He pursued his psychiatry training at Georgetown University School of Medicine where he received accolades from medical students for his teaching and was nominated for teaching award. In the final year of training, Dr. Kakar was selected for a Clinical Fellowship at National Institutes of Mental Health, where he provided psychiatric consultation to patients involved in medical, surgical and neurological phase I-IV clinical trials. Additionally, Dr. Kakar was actively involved in providing psychiatric assessments as a member of psychogenic movement disorder research team.
Dr. Kakar is the Chief Scientific Officer and Associate Medical Director for Segal Trials. He is involved in identification and implementation of early phase research opportunities. Dr. Kakar has extensive experience collaborating with pharmaceutical, biotech and clinical research organizations regarding research methodology and clinical trial design. Dr. Kakar is actively involved in speaking and presenting at local and national organizations. He has successfully published in reputable scientific journals and presented at scientific meetings. Dr. Kakar also provides medical oversight of the Segal Trials investigative team to ensure proper study conduct and optimal patient safety.
Currently, Dr. Kakar is working as the Principal Investigator at Larkin Community Hospital Behavioral Health Services and the West Broward Outpatient Clinic and maintains an active private practice with Compass Health Systems. He conducts clinical trials for phase I-IV studies in indications including ADHD in children, adolescents and adults, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, alzheimer’s disease, PTSD, eating disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, and other neuropsychiatric and medical conditions. Dr. Kakar teaches medical students and residents from Larkin, Nova and Barry University. Dr. Kakar has a waiver to prescribe bupenorphine.
