How do you prevent a recurring yeast infection?
The main way a yeast infection is created is when the population of yeast in the vagina has greatly increased. Candida is a type of yeast fungus that lives within the vagina but in small numbers. If those numbers increase, an infection can develop.
Up to 75% of women will get a vaginal infection at least once in their lives, and 50% percent of women will have recurring infections.
Recurrent or chronic vulvovaginal candidiasis occurs when a woman experiences a vaginal infection more than four times a year.
What are the causes of a yeast infection?
- Frequent use of antibiotics, as they can kill the beneficial bacteria that keep the bacteria population under control
- Certain things that alter your hormones such as birth control pills, estrogen therapy, and pregnancy
- Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
- Certain medical conditions that have an effect on your immune system, particularly HIV
- Obesity
- Tight clothing or synthetics which can cause heat and moist to occur in your genital area
- Having a short distance between the vagina and anus, where microorganisms tend to live
How can you prevent the infection?
- Do not wear tight or synthetic clothing, instead, wear cotton and looser clothes
- When possible do not wear pajama bottoms, go bare and let your genital area breath while you sleep
- When wiping after using the toilet, start from the front to the back
- Avoid douching
- Avoid sex until the infection is gone
