What are hot flashes?
Hot flashes are described as an intense feeling of heat, which is not cause by external sources. They usually occur suddenly or you could feel a gradual increase of your body temperature. Other symptoms include:
- Sweating, especially in the upper parts of your body
- Flushed or red face
- Tingling in your fingers
- Faster than usual heartbeat
- Warm skin
What causes hot flashes?
Although the cause of hot flashes is not exactly clear, studies have found that they are most likely caused due to hormonal changes in the body. Hot flashes is also considered a menopausal symptom.
Here are some hot flash triggers:
- Smoking or being exposed to smoke
- Stress and anxiety
- Spicy foods
- Drinking alcohol
- Caffeine products
- Hot atmosphere (being in a hot room or place)
- Tight clothing
Simple ways to find relief:
- Keep a fan or an ice pack with you
- Keep your body hydrated (sip cold water or other refreshing drinks)
- Dress in layers so that you can adjust your clothing
- Prefer cotton clothing and linens for the night
